This day will be about HEALTHY LIVING.
We want the kids to understand what it means to live a healthy life, how they can do it and why it is important. We want them to understand that mental health is related to their physical health. A nutritionist will explain about the science behind healthy food and then we’ll take them food shopping and assist them while they make some food of their own. They’ll get an introduction to different sports: Australian football, golf, or beach volleyball. We also want them to see some of the beautiful elements of Los Angeles that most people don’t know about:
Hiking Sandstone Peak (highest top in Malibu Mountains)
Hiking to Waterfall Park and Boulder City in Malibu Park
Hiking in Pasadena
Swimming at Malibu Rock Pile
Horse riding in Griffith Park

This day will focus on GIVNG BACK.
We want to teach kids how fulfilling it is to give and focus on the emotions they feel when they give of themselves. They don’t always get something in return, but the the emotional reactions they have as a result of giving is important to feel.
We might do group things like:
Feed the homeless
Adopt a highway
Work with Children Hunger Fund
Clean up the beach with Heal the Bay
Work with Pasadena Humane society to find homes for a few dogs
Make money for a good project by doing yard sale or working somewhere
Kids in recovery need to learn how to have fun while they are sober and they need to create strong bonds with other young people while doing so.
We’ll do activities such as:
Movie making
Record music / rap
Ceramics
Fishing
Disneyland
Legoland
Amusement parks
Video days with popcorn and inspiring movies like “Dead Poet Society’
Beach day
The summer program will include a trip to Catalina for the entire group for 3 days with staff/parent supervision. We’ll go camping, wake boarding, fishing, kayaking, observe the animals on the island and learn about the island’s history. Parents are invited!
At Insight we understand that dealing with teenage issues can be difficult at best. In order to help alleviate some of the angst, we offer parent education and parent support groups lead by our treatment team to help parents gain information, support, and guidance from staff and other parents who have had similar experiences. Insight counselors are also available to parents on an on call basis for guidance and support.
