What Does OCD Really Look Like? Professionals Discuss
We all have an idea of what Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) looks like, but are we correct? On a recent episode of the Insight Teen Hour, experts debunk myths about OCD in teens, children and adults.
Insight Teen Treatment Programs, local Santa Clarita teen mental health and addiction outpatient treatment center, is passionate about the wellbeing and healing of teens and families who are struggling.
On this episode, host Jennifer Campoy and guest speaker Dr. Michele Witkin discussed OCD in adults, teens, and children.
OCD isn’t all about organization and fear of germs
The anxiety disorder actually stretches much farther than that. Everyone experiences some level of healthy anxiety, but it is when intrusive thoughts and endless what-if questions start to negatively impact one’s life does it become an obsession.
These obsessions, such as your child’s safety, obsession over grades, or other fixations, often lead to compulsions; specific, repeated habits and behaviors that dominate and control one’s life.
It can be very difficult for teens and parents to identify OCD and anxiety symptoms in their family members, and that’s why it is so important to check in with your teen regularly about their anxiety levels. A little anxiety and worry is completely normal and healthy but becomes a problem when it is hard for them to function.
If you have concerns for your teen or for yourself, talk to some of the experts and doctors at Insight Treatment Center about how you and your family can learn new and different coping skills and work towards a healthier, happier life together.
