Mental Health Counseling for Teenagers: Strength in Groups

Are you looking for mental health counseling for teenagers that will help your child to flourish? Is your child struggling with addiction or substance abuse problems? Or, is your child feeling depressed, dealing with self-harm issues or even suicidal ideation? Those are more common than many folks might think. At Insight Treatment, we’ve helped so many teenagers to be able to discover what’s causing their mental health challenges, and then ultimately overcome them. One of the most effective methods for doing this: teen therapy groups.

Mental Health Counseling for Teenagers

Our teen support groups are, more or less, what they sound like. Teens, of varying ages and struggles, meet at our facility for a group session. This session is facilitated by our trained counselors. One on one therapy can be very beneficial, but we’ve found that groups can be especially effective for teens. Sometimes, (as you probably know), teens tend to “clam up” when it comes to talking to adults, even in a one on one environment. With other teens, however, they can speak up, connect, and eventually support and learn from each other.

Interpersonal Skills: Growth and Development

Adolescence is a time when so many really develop the social skills that they’ll utilize for the rest of their life. Everyone has their own unique challenges in regards to this, but it can be especially challenging for those struggling with addiction, mental health issues, and more. These groups help teens to grow and develop skills that they might not have had or, in some cases, to strengthen skills that may have atrophied. When teenagers feel like they’re alone, as if they are the only people to have their struggles, see and hear someone their age who’s dealing with something similar, real growth can take place.

A Safe Environment in Many Ways

Our teen support groups are made up of teenagers, from all walks of life, going through similar struggles. However, it’s important to note, teenagers aren’t the only people there. Our trained counselors are exactly that: trained. They know how to run these groups in such a way that every teen, regardless of how shy or withdrawn they might be, gets something out of it, can develop the skills and support they’re looking for. Our counselors can strike that delicate yet important balance between “directing” and a free-flowing environment where all can be heard and listened to.

Support Groups for Teenagers

Mental health counseling is a major part of what we do here at Insight Treatment. However, it’s far from all that we offer. We know that even the best, most successful teen support group isn’t something that teenagers are going to want to be a part of for hours upon hours on end. So, we also (depending on the facility) have climbing walls, games, and just open spaces where teenagers can hang out, get to know each other, and so much more.
